The Kumho Museum of Art, launched as Kumho Gallery in 1989, has been one of the representative institutions active in Mecenat or arts patronage and put its utmost efforts into developing Korean art and society. Since its inauguration, the museum has discovered and fostered up-and-coming artists. Since its moving to a larger facility in 1996, the museum has patronized artists and provided viewers with an opportunity to relish culture through diverse exhibitions and programs.
The museum has also offered general viewers as well as experts aesthetic inspirations through the invitational exhibition of leading Korean mid-career artists and multifarious projects to gain a glimpse of the stream of contemporary art. Since the mid-2000s, the museum has been trying to identify the vestiges of art imprinted on our quotidian life, expanding its exhibition themes to the domains of design and architecture.
The museum has also practiced the purpose of the establishment of the Kumho Cultural Foundation , “Nurturing talent, promoting culture,” operating Kumho Young Artist, a contest program to support young artists actively and the Kumho Art Studio, space for creation offered to young artists since the mid-2000.
Through the Kumho Art Academy that has been running since 1987, the museum has laid emphasis on education, one of its overarching roles alongside collection, preservation and research of artworks. We at the museum intend to seek proper culture and art education, solidifying the museum’s public function and making it more accessible for viewers.
We will further devote ourselves to furnishing viewers with abundance and relaxation through a carnival of exhibitions and related programs.
Thank you.
