GS Caltex Yeulmaru Artist Residency Exhibition(2020-2022)_Beyond Time and Space

Since 2020, GS Caltex Yeulmaru has been running an artist residency on Jangdo Island in Yeosu. This exhibition brings together highlight works from the first to the third resident artists, offering a glimpse into the journey of the residency and its vision for the future.

Each artist spends between three and ten months on Jangdo, creating in close dialogue with the island. Yeulmaru has supported them with programs that allow for focused, uninterrupted work — support that has also brought new energy to the local community and the regional arts scene.

Jangdo itself plays a central role. Connected to the mainland by the Jinseom Bridge, the island is covered and uncovered twice a day by the tide. This rhythm of nature makes Jangdo a place in between land and sea — a shifting, transformative space that continues to inspire powerful artistic ideas.

Living on the island, artists are confronted with these dramatic natural changes and translate them into their own creative language. The experience shakes familiar perceptions of time and space, opening the door to new questions and ways of seeing.

This exhibition features artists who joined the residency from outside Yeosu. Their works reflect the encounter between everyday city life and the unique rhythms of the island. For visitors in Seoul, these pieces awaken the sense of Jangdo within an urban setting, inviting them to step into another layer of time and space — and to experience the world with renewed perception.
