Kilhae Lee? Recent Works 1. The work of Kilhae Lee is intricately linked to the rules of distance and perspective. Lee's command of perspective is not a mere representation of the physical intervals but rather a candid portrayal of human emotions experienced in phases of life. Her work therefore can be defined as a visual transformation of such sentiments through a unique formula. This formula is derived from maintaining a non-subjective stance and expressing her senses on canvas with natural landscape as a basis. The image of nature in Lee's work is ‘forever still', representing the flowing state of constancy. She observes such moving constancy with a non-subjective stance. Thus her work is an abstract visual reformation of senses into specific motifs. This process symbolizes the complex and inexplicable relationship between natural landscape and her emotions as Lee maintains a bird's-eye view separating her from concrete tangibles. Although this gap at times does not enable specific landscapes to fully reflect her intended emotions, such distance assures Lee a level of comfort. 2. In her recent works, Lee seeks to eliminate distance as an element. This dissolution of distance is affected through destruction of physical space and consequent emphasis on the absolutism of the image. This may be viewed as a transformation from an emphatic transfusion of emotion into the erasure of the image itself, using the nature as its base motif. By changing a ‘temporal physical approach' into a ‘non-temporal visual approach', her works are morphing into creative presentation of circular shapes. Time and physical space disappears, an aerial perspective ceases to exist, and we find instead works that take on a completely planar character. Within the timeless space, she realizes liberation of the conscious through a reflection of her emotions. Alongside images of nature, we are introduced to monochromatic geometric screens. They reveal symbolic manifestations of colors as they pass through the filters of emotion. Her works are then part of a formative process of simplifying how we look at nature. We find that Lee's perspective is transfiguring from a visual examination to a place of thought and reflection, and she leads the canvas as her partner in dialogue. She reverses and dramatically metamorphoses images to keep only the barest of form. Only what is reduced to the circle, the pure symbolism of image itself, remains in their places. This may have awakened the expression of ‘form through circular senses' that may have laid obscured in her consciousness. Her works have reached a level where nothing need be drawn and are created only through the reflection of thought itself-what starts as natural images soon function as an alter-self of her emotions. These are displayed through her use of drastic yet symbiotic contrast of bright and dark colors which are intentional filtrations of her sentiments. Rather than the primary volatilities of joy and sorrow, we are approached with neutralized emotions within discrete form. As such, her works become purposeful distillation of her emotions, sotto voce. 3. She displays in her work coexistence of tension and conflict, through her brilliant migration from a vertical representation to a multi-dimensional reinterpretation of sentiments. She recreates her intended space through geometric simplification and conversion of specific imagery. This is represented, for instance, on a single-color canvas that directly contrasts with another, reconfirming her universe of traversing ‘from image to symbol, from symbol to image'. Through this universe, Lee's work is ultimately transformed into a personal space for her reflection of time matured in her subconscious. Yongdae Kim
